Ever eagerly buy a bag of potting soil to transplant your well looked after sprout into a bigger pot, or plant some recently acquired greenery—just to have the soil spawn teeny black flies? These pests will appear in any soil—expensive or cheap, and it’s happened to me one too many times. But thanks to my boyfriend’s step mom, and confirmation from an Arctic dweller online, I have discovered a surefire technique that results in permanent gnat extermination.
Dallas-Lee of an unnamed Arctic location confirmed the only thing consistently killing the gnats and their eggs dead is baking the dirt.
I’ve found placing the dirt in a deep baking dish and heating it through at 300ºF for ~20 minutes does the trick—only bake the amount of soil you need to use and don’t worry about preheating. Or better yet, find a potting soil that has been pre-through heated.
If remaining soil begins hatching its own flies, return it. Most soils come with a 1-year warranty. Simply place the soil inside a plastic bag and tightly tie it shut to contain the flies while returning.

Tonight, I left the club early to come home and make tacos. I blame Valentina’s Mexican hot sauce.

If you’ve been to Steamrollers in Vancouver you may already be a fan of this tangy, addictive hot sauce. If you haven’t tried it yet, do yourself a favour and pick up a bottle. Find this amazing hot sauce at nearly any grocer.
Very easy and super tasty, this pasta will satisfy anyone who likes it spicy.
Hot Italian sausage cut in pieces
Fry in olive oil and garlic
Add cubed tomatoes
diced parsley, basil and hot peppers
white wine
Simmer 30 minutes
Cook penne pasta do not rinse just add 1 cup cold water and drain.
Pour sauce over and let stand a few minutes.

Like many, growing up I played piano off and on for years. Until the final “off” when I sold my upright Yamaha to help with university tuition. Upon graduation my desire to play the piano grew, and I invested in an electronic piano—weighted keys and all.
I can’t play like I wish I could, but right now I’m working on Reading in Bed by Emily Haines & the Soft Skeletons, a simple and beautiful song.
I searched the internet tirelessly for Emily Haines sheet music and finally came up successful!

As wonderful as (((Stereo))) is, I do wish they played less mainstream vocal house and a whole lot more technooooo.
This is Umek live from Club Lehmann in Struttgart, Germany on June 2, 2010.
(((Stereo))) is a Montréal club that will steal your heart. It’s only my favourite place to dance till the sun comes up. This podcast is just a tease of what hides behind Stereo’s doors. Enjoy.
